Success Story
Organization:

Co-Founding the Lincoln County Youth Center

The Situation:

When children in a rural Idaho community were in desperate need of childcare, Karma and her business partner, Rebecca Wood, created the Lincoln County Youth Center. They began by establishing a collaborative team of people who shared their vision and then they lobbied local elected officials for the support to get the program up and running.

Using Karma’s talent for narrative storytelling and Rebecca’s budgeting skills the team started writing grants.

They were able to open the center within a year. Today the community's children have a safe place to stay when parents are away where they get hands-on learning, foundation education, and build community connections.

Program Highlights:

  • Established a local learning collaborative for preschool-aged children.

  • Created an “edible classroom” system where students learn to grow, process, and prepare their own food supported by public and private partners. (This is partnership with the University of Idaho and Glanbia Nutritionals)

  • Installed multimedia learning opportunities to eliminate barriers to educational resources through public and private partnerships. (Partners include the University of Idaho, The Idaho Community Foundation and EDS Technologies)

  • Created a business incubator for children and adults to learn business management practices and get startup funding.

Grant Writing and Funding Results:

  • $1.3 million in funding through grants and donations in three years

Organization:

Founding Lincoln County Connections

The Situation:

Karma saw a need in the community for people to be able to access resources in larger communities nearby. Medical services, higher education, and even shopping can be difficult in rural areas. Karma established a rural on-demand transportation service called Lincoln County Connections. In just over a year of operation, the system is on target to be fully funded within three years.

Program Highlights:

  • Community members have access to non-emergency medical transportation, errand services, shopping, and social activities.

Grant Writing and Funding Results:

  • $60,000 in grant funding in 1 year
